The "Labour Flip": How the AI Boom is Driving a Blue-Collar Surge in India

Randstad's analysis found that blue-collar wages in India are growing at an average annual rate of 5.7%, compared with 4% for entry-level white-collar positions

While artificial intelligence is frequently cast as a threat to jobs, a new study reveals it is actually fueling a massive hiring boom for the skilled tradespeople who build, power, and maintain its physical infrastructure.

An analysis of over 50 million job postings by talent firm Randstad shows that over the last four years, India’s demand for technicians has exploded:

  • Robotics Technicians: Demands surged by more than 500%.

  • Electricians: Hiring skyrocketed by 242%.

  • HVAC Technicians: Demand rose by 200%.

These numbers underscore how the AI and automation wave is opening major doors in technical trades.

Supporting the Digital Backbone

First reported by The Times of India, the data highlights an escalating need for workers who support the physical infrastructure of the digital economy. Data centers require non-stop power, cooling systems must run 24/7, and modern factories depend heavily on automated machinery that requires expert installation and upkeep.

Viswanath PS, Managing Director and CEO of Randstad India, describes this trend as a "labour flip," noting that skilled technical trades are starting to outpace traditional, entry-level office roles.

The Wage Gap is Shrinking

This shifting demand is directly impacting paychecks. Randstad’s data shows that blue-collar wages in India are climbing at an average annual rate of 5.7%, noticeably outpacing the 4% growth seen in entry-level white-collar jobs.

Because of this, the salary gap between skilled trades and traditional desk jobs is narrowing rapidly. Specialized technical roles—like robotics mechanics and plant operators—are now out-earning basic desk positions (such as data-entry and junior accounting), many of which face an increasing risk of displacement from AI-driven efficiencies.

Balanced Growth Across Sectors

The hiring volumes mirror this wage growth. Driven by massive infrastructure projects and the expansion of AI facilities, India's blue-collar job market expanded by 93% between 2022 and 2026.

At the same time, white-collar employment grew by more than 40%. This dual expansion makes India one of the few major global
